Alberta Provincial Nominee Program

Utilize your skills and experience to help the Alberta economy and become a permanent resident.

What is the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program?

To encourage immigration to the province of Ontario, the province nominates individuals based on work skills, experience, and education to improve its economy. The Alberta Provincial Nominee Program partners with the federal government to nominate candidates for permanent residency.

There are currently 3 streams under the Alberta Provincial Nominee Program:

  1. Alberta Opportunity Stream
  2. Alberta Express Entry Stream
  3. Self-Employed Farmer Stream

NOTE: Requirements can change over time, and streams can be opened or closed without warning by the province.

If the stream is through Express Entry, you must create an IRCC profile and show you are interested in settling in Alberta to receive nomination. Find out more about Express Entry.

Alberta Opportunity Stream

This stream is foreign workers working in an eligible occupationwho are inside Canada and on a valid work permit.

This is a very broad category, covering many possible occupations at all National Occupation Classification (NOC) skill levels. There are a number of occupations that are not eligible, however, and a worker in one of those should choose a different stream.

Alberta Express Entry Stream

In this stream, there is no direct application form available from AINP for applicants to apply at any time.

You must first create an Express Entry profile, expressing interest to settle in Alberta and be accepted into the Express Entry pool under one of the 3 Express Entry programs (CEC, FSW and/or FST).

Based on current economic needs in Alberta and the score of the candidates in the pool, the province selects applicants for provincial nomination.

An applicant can improve their chances of being nominated by increasing their points by demonstrating strong connection to the province of Alberta. This includes: graduating from an Alberta post-secondary institution or having a close relative who is already a citizen or permanent resident living in Alberta.

After Receiving your Provincial Nomination

After being issued a provincial nomination from Alberta, you have 30 days to accept the nomination.

You will then receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residency through your Express Entry profile. You have 6 months from the date of invitation to provide all supporting documentation and submit your permanent resident application.

Self Employed Farmer Stream

The self-employed farmer stream is for those with:
  • proven farm management skills
  • the ability to invest at least $500,000 into a primary production farming business in Alberta and must show a business plan for that investment.

The application must detail their current farm type (crops or livestock), location, years in operation, and the applicant’s past responsibilities. Details on exploratory visits to Alberta, proposed partners, type of ownership, and any current business arrangements/offers for land in Alberta must all be included in the application, along with net worth, references, and supporting documents.
